fave finds 4.0 | mother's day edition

garden-friendly tote \\ wine cork labels \\ seasonal cooking \\ zucchini bread

Mother's Day definitely snuck up on me this year! I thought some of you might be in the same boat as me and it would be beneficial to everyone to have some ideas for all the lovely moms out there!

My mom is really excited to step up her vegetable garden this summer and you can never have too many gardening supplies, so a garden tote seemed perfect, a lil diy action using wine corks to label your garden, a cookbook with a focus on cooking seasonally with your vegetables, and one of my favorite treats: zucchini bread- exactly what I would love to have with my mom and a cup of coffee in the morning...

What will you be picking out for your mom this year? If nothing else, an extra hug and a big ol' "thanks for all that you do" always goes over well!

apartment inspiration

happy friday everyone! I am especially excited for this weekend because it time to move into the apartment! My parents have been beyond generous with allowing me to "crash" with them during this transition time, but now that life is a bit more settled, it's time to actually settle in to the city of Milwaukee. Most of my things are still packed in boxes, so you can imagine the fun I will having sorting through all those things I probably should have tossed when I was first packing them up :) But hey, it's all just a part of the process.

I am really looking forward to having my own space and naturally, decorating is #1 on the list....which means finding a lil inspiration via pinterest had to come into play. Check out some of my inspiration for creating my own space in the new apartment and you can see more homey inspirations on my home & design board too!

d i y: etched beer steins!

When I was thinking about what I wanted to get friends and family for Christmas, I knew I wanted to try to do some crafting for at least one person and Ry’s dad and stepmom became the lucky winners J They have spoken about taking a trip to Germany in the future, so I thought it would be fun to make them some “custom” beer steins to go with their Germany travel guide....

Enter: glass etching! A super easy way to add a little something extra to your ordinary glassware! Now I will admit that I kind of cheated by buying pre-made stencils, but I know that making your own is another great addition to this project and can be done easily an adhesive paper. Whether you make your own stencil or use one from the store, the process wasn’t complicated and I really liked the results (so did Ry’s parents!)

Supplies:
-glassware (cup, mason jar, vase, etc.)
-Armour etch (I found mine at Michael’s)
-stencil or adhesive paper to make a stencil
-Brush
-newspaper/paper bag to cover your work space

Directions:

  1. Determine your design-if you bought stencils, choose the letters you need or decide which image you want to use for the etching (remember it’s permanent so choose wisely!)
  2. Stick your stencil onto the glass where you want the design to be and make sure it is pressed down firmly so none of the etching cream leaks under
  3. Apply generous amount of the etching cream to your stencil, so that all the empty space is covered. Be careful that you don’t put too much, because you don’t want it to run!
  4. Let the etching cream sit…note: the instructions on Armour Etch said it only needed about 1 minute, but after reading other tutorials, I gave it a full 10 minutes.
  5. Wash etching cream off…remove stencil and dry off.
Viola! You are left with a fun design and glassware that has just a little extra personality J

satisfy your DIY tooth

even though Pinterest is one of, if not the, go to site to find DIY inspiration, I am happy to peruse other sources as well-the more DIY the merrier (if only there was more time!). The places I have found myself checking in with are Curbly and Julep, a creation by Minted. Curbly is a great DIY design community where both original and curated projects are shared all in one spot...it has a focus of projects for the home, which is great if you are looking to spruce things up a bit or just give your space a bit of a makeover. Julep has a similar idea of being a community and collaborative space, with a variety of different contributors  but I'd say that Julep is where you will find DIY for in and out of the home-gift ideas, entertaining tips, and a whole mix of other things!
I encourage you to take a peek at both of these sites and see if you can find any projects to tackle or maybe some inspiration for holiday gifts! Here are a few of my favorite finds...

Hope you enjoy these sites and find a fun DIY (that you will pin, naturally!)

DIY inspiration: nesting

As our departure date grows nearer, I am getting really excited about the prospect of Ry and I (and Reef!) having our own space. I am what I like to call, a "nester". No matter how long I am going to be in a place-hotels, vacation stays, studying abroad-I have to nest, settle in and make the space my own. Even if it means just a few pictures up or actually using the drawers at a hotel (I'm a dork, I know!) Anyways, with that in mind, I have had my eye on lots of home inspirations on Pinterest lately and thought I would share a few of my favorite ideas/tips/projects I have found for sprucing up your space and really making it your own AND finding ways to maximize your space...

DIY: blank card creations

Awhile back I purchased a set of blank white note cards and I have been having some fun using them lately! I tend to keep it simple and of course, Etsy always offer inspiration (aka the lawn mower card seen below). I have struggled to find time in my life for lots of crafting, but when I can, I try to at least do a little thing here and there. I think these card are one great way that I have been able to get crafty and you can easily do this too! Seriously, do it! I found my blank cards at Michael's, possibly even in the dollar bin and then just use fine tip sharpies for the images and text. Take a peek at a few I have done lately! (I also threw one that I did awhile back that were using colored card stock & a one-hole punch-DIY motto: keep it simple!)

Supplies needed:
-set of blank cards (white or any color really)
-Fine-point Sharpies (I like the Sharpie Pen best for the text)
-Colored cardstock & a one-hole punch for the last type of card
-Your imagination! But of course, peruse the world wide web for inspiration :)

sorry for the reddish tint on the pics, swear they are white cards!

Happy crafting!

Instagram prints!

Instagram has got to be one of the most popular apps out there for smart phones and you can definitely see why-great finishes for all your impromtu shots and a fun way to share with your friends and family...especially if you aren't into tweeting everything (guilty!)
With all the great shots you get using Instagram, it's only natural that you would want to have way to gaze upon them in all their insta-glory with some hard copies of these photos! Lucky for you, Kanvess makes this possible and even better, it's affordable!

Only 25 cents a print and free shipping when you order over a 100, which may seem one too many, but for only $25, there are a lot of photo projects in the works for these puppies! The photos are 3x3 and could work really well for decorations in your house or apartment, like these ideas below....

d i y: chalkboard wine glasses

Finally! I managed to focus for about 30 minutes and accomplished a long over due diy...chalkboard wine glasses! So simple and it adds a fun touch to the glasses, especially if you are having company over.
The whole process was very easy, you just need:

-wine glasses (big red wine goblets are my favorite)
-chalk board paint
-a paintbrush
*Special thanks to Ry for providing all the supplies...back in December (see I told you this was overdue!)

The process really couldn't be any simpler....
1. Open the paint; mix the paint with a paint stirrer...or a plastic knife like I did!
2. Dip paint brush in & apply the first coat to each base of the wine glasses
3. Let dry for about 20 minutes
4. Repeat step two and apply a second coat to ensure the base is fully covered
5. Let the glasses dry a full day before using chalk on them....viola!

After the first coat-looks dark, but trust me-a second coat is best!
Second coat applied!
Now to wait a day...then it's chalk time!

If you have some spare wine glasses, I definitely recommend giving this a whirl-it was so easy, I only regret taking so darn long to sit down and do it! Did you DIY this weekend? I hope I can find some time to get a few other projects on my list completed-check out all my favorites ideas on my d i y pinterest board!

determined to d i y

I have a ridiculous amount of craft projects and DIY ideas saved everywhere-in email drafts, on sticky notes, and of course on pinterest. Despite my good intentions to spend my evenings crafting, it has been far too long since I have put aside time or found the
time to focus on any projects.
I have decided that this must change and my inspiration is coming from one of my favorite bloggers: a pair and a spare. If you have not checked out her blog, I highly recommend it, especially if you are into the DIY/fashion scene. Today she featured these amazing silk shorts that I have put right on the top of my list...check it out:
diy scarf shorts via a pair and a spare
Awesome right?! Well I am traveling to Chicago next week and I am going to be on the lookout for a great scarf to use on this project so I can have my own pair of scarf print shorts. Since I have to wait until I find the perfect scarf for my shorts, I have had this project patiently waiting in the wings and I think that this week/end is going to be the perfect time to get it done!
